Anyone who saw Sam knew he was the real deal. I met Sam in the late '80's, he was having a pre-show dinner and was bombarded by fans, and when the show started, he said something like "Some people, and I know you all mean well, think that I want to meet you and talk to you...but sometimes at a show, I just want to eat my dinner uninterrupted."
I thought that was a tough and even risky thing to say at the beginning of a show, but people respected Sam's honesty.
His point was well taken, and his way of communicating with his voice and performance.
Sam, you will be sorely missed!

Sam , thanks for the memories , the
good times and the not so good times
( like the night we wrecked my S.U.V.)
the stories you told me and the times
we shared together . I know life goes
on and everybody has to go sooner or
later . Itīs just that itīs a dark day
when the legends die and their presence
is felt no more .I wish I could hear you
call me "Azzhole Mezkin" just one more
time , Vaya con Dios , Amigo , Memo G.

What a blow to the blues world and to us all!
I remember seeing Sam years ago. Later on I started playing keyboards for Joe Jonas and found out they were good friends and got to meet and hang out with Sam and Joe.
What stories (or lies) they could tell(LOL)!
When he would come see Joe play, Joyce would walk him back across the street to the car and he would kiss her on the cheek, he loved the ladies!
Sam, you will be missed by us all, and we will all sing "The Blues"!

What a huge loss this is for the blues music world! I saw Sammy the 1st time @ the King Biscuit Fest 1998, & many times since. I am proud to say that he has been a great influence on my singing career. He will be sadly missed
but fondly remembered. We'll continue to keep the his blues alive!
God Bless his family & friends.
Rest in Peace
Big Jeff

Sammy- You and Anson were the first band my then 6 year old son ever saw. He said after that Fort Worth gig that he wanted to play the blues.
He is now 19, and he played "I'm your professor" at a gig this weekend with his blues band. How prophetic.
