As one of your therapists while in the hospital, I never heard your voice or your music, but admired your spirit and tenacity as you struggled through the indignities of illness as you relearned walking, taking care of your needs and tried patiently to communicate through my ineptness of lipreading. All the while you had music playing to accompany your remarkable progress, and the joy of returning home. As a musician of a different type (pedal harp), I too know the importance of music to healing. Now you truly can play your music at HOME.

I didn't know Sam very well, but I felt a great connection with what he and Anson were doing. I'm sorry to see him go so quickly.

Sam, you will be so greatly missed. It feels like there is such a hole in our souls right now, but being able to listen to your music fills it immediately. We have been fortunate to see you and Anson in so many places over the years...at the Bishopstock Blues Festival in England, at a New Year’s Eve show at the Grand Emporium in Kansas City, at many shows here in Tulsa, including one at a bowling alley with you bowling a line or two while the band was on break! But for us, the best times were seeing Anson & the Rockets with Sam Myers every year for the past 19 years at the King Biscuit Blues Festival. When autumn rolls around, and we feel the pull of the delta calling us to Helena, a smile comes to our faces, knowing that Sam and Anson will be there. We know that you’ll be with us every year to come.
The music you and Anson made has been the soundtrack of our lives. When Texas meets the Delta, there is nothing better and we’ll start dancing every time. Your music meant so much to us that we gave our first son your name. Whenever we saw you, you’d say “and how is my young namesake doing?” You informed him that he should be Sugar Sam, since the name Sweet Sam was taken. We will forever think of you when we use that term of endearment and call for our Sammy.
We owe a great debt of gratitude to Anson for befriending you and introducing us to the great Sam Myers, the Deacon of the Delta. For us, friendships are the true riches of this world and when we observed you and Anson on stage, it was obvious that your friendship made you rich beyond words.
Sweet Sam, your presence in our lives has been such a blessing. Thank you for sharing your life and your music with us. Rest well, with angels and archangels and all the company of heaven.
David, Liz, Sam & Will Berntson

Dear Sam,
I hope you're resting comfortably now. I know it's been a long haul these last several months. Yet I know your spirit is strong, loving and that you care so very much about the people who care for you. I know your spirit is with us now, as we mourn your passing and will be with us forever.
Thank you for so generously sharing your gifts and talents with the world. The positive impact and legacy that you have shared with the world will continue on and on. You left your mark, a mark many of us will never forget and we'll have the chance to relive over and over with your music.
Thank you so much for your support of my music. You always gave me great feedback, advice, suggestions and encouragement. I will never forget those great talks we had. Sure hope I made you laugh. You know I always tried to make you laugh. You were such a great listener. Such a fantastic person to talk to. And you always responded with such empathy and love. That is another one of your great gifts.
Rest now. I'll be talking with you soon in my prayers. I love you Sam.
Joni B.

I'm so fortunate to have had the privilege of playing with a true Blues Legend. I'll always remember the nights at Schooner's. Sam would leave his barstool, walk slowly to the stage, light a cigarette with a HUGE flame from his lighter, and give us all a lesson in the Blues. Thank you, sir.
